BookRenter.com and Some Tips for Buying Text Books
Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 9:30AM Now is the time when everyone is busy making last minute text book purchases. I should know because it's been a ritual for me at the start of every new semester! (I would make him do it, but for heaven's sakes, I'm the one who runs a deals blog!!) I wanted to remind you about the website BookRenter.com. They may not have everything you need, but it's definitely worth checking to see if it's a good fit for you. I know we've ended up with TONS (and I do mean TONS) of legal text books my husband never wants to see again. And after AWFUL experiences trying to sell them online, I wish I'd saved myself the trouble and found this site earlier. Alas, I did not, but maybe I can save you!
If you find renting is not the best option, here are some tips for textbook buying:
- Carve out a couple of hours where you can take your time and do thorough research. Get it all done in one sitting or you will forget what the best deals are! (or is that just me?)
- Check multiple sites. I usually went to Amazon, Half, and Barnes and Noble, occasionally ebay, and I even googled too, just to see if I was missing something.
- Get the Barnes and Noble Membership. The $25 price tag might be off putting, but believe me, you'll gain it back. When I finally figured this out, I was kicking myself for ignoring this option for 3 years. I bought the membership, and the discount for the book I bought it with was $26. So I fully paid for it right then and there. And now I get free coffee coupons in my inbox from time to time which makes my day!
- Go through Ebates and get money back. As painful as it is to pay all that cash out for books, at least you get something back with Ebates. That way, when Barnes and Noble isn't sending you free coffee coupons, you can use your Ebates check to pay full price =)
