The Penny Experiment
Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 8:00PM I have joined a program called The Penny Experiment. Basically, Jeffrey Strain is going to try to turn one found penny into $1 million worth of donated food. He is enlisting coupon bloggers to help him reach that goal by spending as little as possible while donating tons. So far, $419.41 worth of groceries have been purchased for $41.56, and now I am adding my first two contributions! I am sorry in advance for the terrible quality of the pictures. In a former (read pre-kid) life, I was a photographer. I just haven't found the money to upgrade to a digital SLR, so for now you'll have to suffer with these pics!
Shopping trip number one:
This trip was not as fabulous as I would have hoped, but this was the last day I could take advantage of some sales, so here's what I got:
Celestial Seasonings Tea (1)
Wolfgang Puck Organic Soup (1)
Smart Taste Spaghetti (1)
Peter Pan Peanut Butter (2)
Regular price total: $11.97
Total paid: $2.86
Shopping trip number two:
This trip was much better. I had more time to plan, more coupons to use, and some awesome sales to take advantage of. Here's what I got:
Oikos Yogurt (1)
Lenders Bagels (2)
Del Monte Veggies (8)
Kashi Frozen Entree (1)
Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate (2)
Hunt's Pasta Sauce (2)
Muir Glen Organic Soup (2)
Green Giant Veggies (2)
Stacy's Pita Chips (1)
Total Paid: $1.76!
I hope to get this food off to the Food Bank as soon as I can, and I will post about that as soon as I have. I also plan to continue making as many shopping trips as I can for this, so stay tuned for more!
Want to keep up with the project? Check out the twitter page for updates. Don't forget to follow The Budget Mommy while you're at it!

I told my daughter today that couponing would be a great idea. See how much food we could get for free (or as little as possible) for our pantry at church!
Amazing!
I haven't done that well on a shopping trip before! You paid $1.76 and it was regularly $36.51?!? How cool is that!
you got some awesome deals!
